Overview:

California only continues to grow more multi-ethnic and multiracial. Latino and Asian American communities are driving the State’s population growth, and these communities will only grow more important in the state’s politics and economy. Based on an analysis of Census 2020 data, UCLA LPPI has found that more Californians are identifying as “two or more races” or “other race,” including Latinos who were less likely in 2020 to identify themselves as “White” than a decade ago.

Key Findings:

  1. There are 11 counties where Latinos are already a majority. Many of these counties are Inland and in the Central Valley. Los Angeles County will soon be majority Latino.
  2. There are 5 counties where Asian Americans are already the first or second-largest ethnic/racial group.
  3. There are 2 counties where the White Californian population grew between 2010 and 2020.
  4. 14.6% of Californians identify as “two or more races.” California is growing increasingly multi-racial and multi-ethnic, and these trends will only continue.
