Overview:

The lawsuit alleges that Galveston County discriminates against and dilutes the voting strength of Black and Latino voters in denying them the opportunity to elect candidates of their choice in countywide offices. This lawsuit follows a pending 2013 suit filed against Galveston County regarding their 2013 redistricting plans pursuant to the 14th  Amendment and the Voting Rights Act. UCLA VRP have joined in a subsequent lawsuit to challenge the ongoing discrimination in the wake of the 2021 redistricting in the county
